What Makes us Special

Assumption Convent School (ACS) in Germiston, Johannesburg, distinguishes itself through a combination of a “small school” family atmosphere and big school academic results. While many private schools in Johannesburg are large, ACS deliberately keeps numbers low to ensure every student is personally known.

  • Capped Classes: Classes rarely exceed 25 students, allowing for genuine individual attention.
  • Personal Knowledge: It is often noted that our teachers and Principal know every girl by name. This prevents students from “getting lost in the system” and fosters a nurturing environment where quieter students can thrive.
  • 100% Matric Pass Rate: The school boasts a long-standing record of a 100% IEB Matric pass rate.
  • University Degree Pass: Our students consistently achieve a 100% University Degree pass rate, which is the gold standard for academic success in South Africa.
  • Top Achievers: Our students students frequently appear on the IEB outstanding achievement lists.
  • Service Oriented: There is a strong emphasis on outreach and “servant leadership,” encouraging girls to look outward and contribute to the wider Germiston and Bedfordview communities.
  • All-Girls Environment (Grade 1–12): While the pre-primary (“Baby Steps”) is co-ed, the main school is exclusively for girls. We focus on: Removing social pressures during the crucial developmental years, tailoring teaching methods specifically to how girls learn best, providing leadership roles (Prefects, Captains) exclusively to girls, ensuring our girls leave with confidence in their ability to lead.

Our Past, Present and Future

  • Catholic Foundation: While it is a Catholic school founded by the Missionary Sisters of the Assumption (1946), Assumption Convent is known for being inclusive of all faiths. The ethos focuses on moral character, kindness, and service rather than rigid indoctrination.
  • Space Camp: Uniquely, ACS hosts an annual Space Camp, a STEM-focused event that is rare for a school of its size and encourages girls to pursue careers in science and engineering.
  • Rowing: ACS is one of the few schools in the area that offers Rowing as a competitive sport, which is a prestigious and physically demanding discipline often associated with much larger institutions.
  • Long-Standing Tradition: Founded in 1946 by the Missionary Sisters, our school combines rich Catholic heritage with modern, quality education.  We have been providing quality Catholic education for girls in Johannesburg for over 80 years.
  • Caring Community: Our school is rooted in a philosophy of care, welcoming all faiths and nurturing each student’s potential.
  • Holistic Development: We focus on academic excellence, creativity, faith, sport, and personal growth to develop well-rounded individuals.
  • Inclusive and Diverse: We celebrate South Africa’s diversity, fostering an environment where every girl feels safe, included, and respected.
  • Strong Values: Gospel values and respect for all cultures and religions are at the heart of our mission and daily life.
  • Focus on Family and Community: We foster strong family values and a sense of community, inspiring our students to make a meaningful difference in the wider world.

A word from our School Principal

It is a humbling thing to walk through the corridors of Assumption and realise that each laugh, lesson, and morning assembly is part of something much greater – a legacy that spans generations. A mother, once a pupil in blue, now walks her daughter through our gates. That quiet moment speaks volumes: trust passed down, values lived out, and a belief in something enduring.
