What Makes us Special

Veritas College is the only Co-educational, Catholic day school that caters for children Aged 2 to Grade 12 on the Far East Rand.

  1. Holistic Education
    Developing a curriculum that is rounded, relevant, covers the diverse needs of individuals and the needs of Africa (life skills, work skills, inclusion and transformation). We aim to provide the children entrusted to us as many opportunities as possible to grow academically, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
  2. Encountering Jesus
    Through acts of faith, hope and love expressed by showing respect and compassion within our community, especially for the vulnerable and oppressed. To live with the integrity and purpose that comes from the vision of Jesus.
  3. Cultivating Value-based Relationships
    Accepting diversity and showing mutual respect, compassion and trust in each other’s integrity through the practice of Ubuntu.
  4. Developing a Sensitivity to Injustice
    Specifically, to historic injustices, present day corruption, racism, xenophobia and violence and practising restorative justice.
  5. Inspiring Care for the Earth
    Our common home (Ikhaya Lethu) and responding to Laudato si’ as a call to ecological conversion. This also means active engagement and advocacy in our concern over ecological destruction, pollution and exploitation.

Our Past, Present and Future

Veritas College was founded in 1992; however, the story of Veritas began many years earlier amid a gold rush between the two World Wars of the 20th Century. It was at this moment in history when the King Williams Town Dominican Sisters saw a need and answered the call to establish a Catholic school for girls in Springs. In 1930 Our Lady of Mercy Convent was founded and grew to become a leading school for girls on the Witwatersrand. At an equally critical time in the history of Springs, the Christian Brothers saw the need to establish a boy’s school. The gold mines were closing, and this provided an opportunity to purchase a unique property, the decommissioned Springs Mine, in 1964. This would become St Brendan’s Christian Brothers College.

At another critical point in the history of South Africa, with the dawn of democracy on the horizon, the sun was setting on the two schools that had laid the strong foundation that would become Veritas College. In 1992 the amalgamation of these two schools would set a new path for Catholic education in Springs. The Convent would become home to Veritas Preparatory and Pre-Preparatory Schools, and the CBC campus would house Veritas Senior School. From that moment on, the College continued to grow and change with the times while still upholding the values, ethos and charisms of its founders Saint Dominic and Blessed Edmund Rice. Veritas continues to Learn, Live and Lead with Love in the 21st Century.

We offer our learners a safe stimulating educational environment with an emphasis on spiritual growth and academic excellence.
Our learners are enthusiastic members of our small school community, a family-centred school. They are keen to engage in our extensive extra-mural programme offering a mix of sporting, cultural and skills-based activities. We strive to develop our learners into being bold, compassionate and committed members of society with a passion for justice and advocacy.
